Throughout the weeks leading up to spring practice we will break down each position  for the Crimson Tide this season.

Starting off with one of the important positions on the field, the quarterback.

Returning:

Bryce Young

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young amassed over 4800 passing yards and 47 touchdowns in his first season starting. As a true sophomore, Bryce led the Crimson Tide to a 13-2 record which included an SEC championship where he collected 369 total yards and 3 TDs.

Bryce also broke many school records which were set by his predecessor Mac Jones. Such as the SEC championship game passing record with 321 yards. He also broke Jone’s school record for single-season passing yards, which was set back in 2020 at 4500 yards.

Throughout a season of inconsistency, Bryce was the one guy who was consistent in his stellar performances. Look For Bryce to have a slight dip in production, not because of Bryce himself, but because of the talent in the backfield. Expect the Tide to lean on a strong run game while also utilizing the play-action to get Bryce open seams.

Jalen Milroe

The Sophomore from Katy, Texas didn’t see the field much but that didn’t stop the fan base from seeing the potential.  Serving as the third-string QB, Milroe passed for 41 yards and one touchdown.

Milroe is probably the best athlete at the quarterback position. He has blazing speed, rushing for 57 yards on 15 attempts. Don’t let his legs take away from his arm talent. He is a skilled passer who will continue to improve in his second season in the program.

With some attrition in the QB room, Milroe expects to step up and be the back-up to Young.

Leaving:

Paul Tyson

The Great-Grandson of the legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Tyson entered his name into the transfer portal at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season.

Serving as QB two, Tyson completed 10 of 16 for 150 yards with no touchdowns.

Tyson Looks to make an impact for Coach Herm Edwards at Arizona St. Tyson is a bigger bodied quarterback, he doesn’t offer much in terms of on the ground but has a rocket arm. He looks to compete against incumbent quarterback Jayden Daniel’s for the stating gig in Tempe.

Newcomer:

Ty Simpson

A five star prospect according to 247Sports.com, Simpson hails from the state of Tennessee. He chose Alabama over Tennessee, Clemson and Ole Miss.

Simpson is a dual-threat in every sense of the word. He is elusive  in the pocket and has the ability to extend plays on the ground. He has good passing mechanics, as his father is an FCS head coach. Simpson reportedly also has a strong football IQ.

Look for Ty to push Milroe in the battle for QB two.

Overview

Overall this is a strong position group for the Tide. Bryce has proven to be healthy (knock on wood) and will be the full-time starter thorough the 2022-2023 campaign. They also have young depth behind Bryce with Simpson and Milroe. Don’t except any quarterback controversy this off-season (barring any injuries.)
