TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On a beautiful Wednesday for softball, the Alabama Crimson Tide took down the North Alabama Lions, 9-1 in six innings. This was the third run rule victory of the season for Alabama, with the last coming on an 8-0 win against St. Thomas last weekend.
The Crimson Tide offense opened the game with fireworks in the 1st inning when sophomore standout Abby Duchscherer hit a towering blast over the wall in left for a two-run home run. “I felt like Abby was going to do something big today and she did it in the first inning. This was a huge start to our offense and I was so happy for her,” said Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy.
The long ball worked again in the third inning when senior Emma Broadfoot blasted the ball off the scoreboard for a three-run homer. Broadfoot hit 2-3 in this one with a team-leading 3 RBIs. Before this game, the senior had not yet recorded a hit or RBI this season.
Later in the game, sophomore Larissa Preuitt gave the Tide even more insurance with a two-run single before Kali Heivilin ended things early with another run-scoring single in the 6th.
Defensively, Jaala Torrence was dealing again. Despite giving up her first run of the season, Torrence was comfortable in the circle all game long. She tallied up 6 strikeouts with only 2 hits allowed on just 1 run.
“Jaala was dominant all weekend long for us. She works through innings quickly and keeps the pace of the game high, our defense loves playing behind her,” said Coach Murphy.
This was the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams, with Alabama coming away with the victory in the prior three games. With this win, the undefeated Crimson Tide extended its early season winning streak to 11.
