The University of Alabama is no stranger to producing illustrious alumni within its athletics program, and the golf program is no exception. With 25 athletes who have competed on the PGA Tour and many more across other professional circuits worldwide, Alabama has established itself as a pipeline for elite golfers. However, one Alabama alumnus stands out among the rest.

Kentucky native Justin Thomas has been a PGA Tour staple ever since he left The University of Alabama to earn his tour card in 2013, but before becoming a pro, he made a name for himself with the Crimson Tide.

Thomas began his career at Alabama in 2011, arriving on campus as one of the top five recruits in the country. In his freshman year, he became a first-team PING All-American and Freshman All-American, and became the first golfer in program history to win his first collegiate event. Thomas was also named SEC Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year.

In 2012, Thomas had his best year yet. He won the Haskins Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate golfer, as well as the Jack Nicklaus Award for the same honor. He also won the Phil Mickelson Award, presented to the national freshman of the year. He became the first University of Alabama player to capture all three honors.

In 2013, Thomas and the Tide defeated Illinois 4-1 to win the NCAA national championship. This marked the final season Thomas played for the Crimson Tide. In July 2013, Thomas announced via Twitter that he would forgo his remaining two years of eligibility for a chance to become a professional.

“Very excited to say I’m turning pro after the Walker Cup in September,” the tweet said. “Can’t wait to play against the best week in and week out!”

Even after more than a decade on tour, he has remained connected to the Crimson Tide. In December 2025, he donated $1 million to the Crimson Standard, which will be used to upgrade facilities for both the men’s and women’s golf teams.

“It’s hard to put into words the love and feelings I have for The University of Alabama,” Thomas said. “I was so lucky to spend two incredible years playing under coach Seawell.”

Coach Jay Seawell has also continued to speak highly of Thomas.

“I am so proud of Justin and thankful for what he’s meant to our program and The University of Alabama,” Seawell said. “He is a big part of the legacy of Alabama golf. It means so much that he would be willing to give back to the golf programs.”

Since leaving the University, Thomas has won two major championships. His first came at the 2017 PGA Championship at the Quail Hollow Club, and the second was at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Thomas continues to be one of the top golfers on the PGA Tour, and regularly visits Alabama’s campus for football games and other events.
