No. 17 Alabama lost the series rubber match to Auburn, 3-0 on Saturday to close out the regular season. The Crimson Tide finished the year at 33-16 while going 10-14 in SEC play which was the worst finish in conference play in Patrick Murphy’s 26 years as Alabama’s head coach.
“There is still a lot of softball to be played this year, and you haven’t seen our best yet,” said Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy.
For the Tide, freshman Jocelyn Briski got the start in the circle for the second consecutive day after a strong performance last night. This time around, Auburn wasn’t fooled.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the second inning thanks to an Anna Wohlers run-scoring single. Alabama then replaced Briski with Kayla Beaver in hopes of limiting the damage. With two away in the inning, Neila Peralta collected an RBI single of her own to push the lead to two.
In the fourth inning, the Tiger offense stretched their lead to three after a towering shot over the left field wall by Amelia Lech.
Annabell Widra toed the slab in this one for the Tigers, and she was as good as you can be. The junior only allowed four hits on the afternoon while holding the Tide offense to 0-for-6 with runners on base.
Alabama had a big opportunity in the top of the sixth to put runs on the board. The Tide had two runners on with one out, but Widra picked up a strikeout followed by a pop-out. Alabama was then unable to do anything in the top of the seventh, securing the series victory for the Tigers.
Alabama will look to find new success in the SEC tournament starting on May 7th.
