TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After the postponement last night, Alabama baseball and the top-ranked Texas A&M Aggies squared off in a double-header with A&M winning 10-5 and 18-9.
“Long day of baseball they are a long-lineup, and very good weapons on the mound,” said Coach Rob Vaughn.
In game one, Alabama was firing on all cylinders early, with Greg Farone racking six punchouts through the first three innings. The momentum carried to the bats with the Tide taking the lead in the home half of the third, on a Gage Miller first-pitch home run, number 16 on the season. TJ McCants followed that up with a double off the top of the wall to score two runs.
The Tide followed that up in the fourth with a two-run home run by Ian Petrutz to give Alabama the 5-0 lead. The game unraveled for Farone in the fifth, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and a double. The game turned around when the Tide gave the ball to Tyler Fay, who gave up a grand slam to Caden Sorrell to give the Aggies the lead. =
The Tide had no answers for the Aggies out of the bullpen, with home runs by Braden Montgomery, Jackson Appel and Sorrell for a second time off Zane Propst to put the game out of reach for the Tide. Alabama had no answers for the A&M bullpen.
McCants led the way at the plate for the Tide, going a perfect 4-4 from the plate with three singles and a double; Petrutz ended the game 2-5 with a single and a homer.
Game two was a different story; with Ben Hess getting the ball for the Tide, things unraveled quickly in the second with 12 runs being scored between the two teams, with A&M chasing Hess out of the game, taking a liner off the lower leg and exiting the game. A&M scored eight runs without an out. The Tide cut the deficit in half with Mac Guscette hitting a grand slam just squeaking over the wall in left. That was Guscette’s first homer on the season.
“With pitchers you just have to be smart with how you handle injury,” said Vaughn on Hess’ exit.
It was just that kind of afternoon for Alabama, with A&M taking advantage of an E4 that would have ended the inning for Alabama, scoring three runs to extend the lead back up to comforting territory. The Tide responded with a three spot thanks to a Justin Lebron solo shot to left field and a two-run double for Guscette.
The Aggies continued to thrive offensively with a three-run blast by Montgomery in the seventh to put the game out of reach to clinch the series. Lebron hit home run number two of the game on a two-run blast to left-center field in the bottom of the eighth. Miller’s 37 game streak of reaching base at least once came to an end after an 0-5 day from the dish.
“We can go through the film, but none of those matters, except for the intensity and the mentality,” said Vaughn on team’s mentality into tomorrow.
Next for Alabama is the series finale, with the Tide looking to avoid the sweep with the first pitch set for noon central time.
