Alabama’s softball team collected its sixth shutout of the season on Tuesday, defeating UAB 4-0 at Mary Bowers Field.
Courtney Gettins and Alexis Osorio combined to shut the Blazers out and allowed only four hits. The two combined for seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Gettins pitched the first five innings and Osorio closed out the last two, earning her first save of the season.
Offensively, Kaylee Tow got the Alabama offense off to a fast start in the top of the first with one out, blasting a solo home run to right-center, giving Alabama a 1-0 lead.
UAB’s offense threatened in the bottom of the inning after back-to-back singles and a sac bunt had the Blazers with two runners in scoring position with one out. Gettins induced a groundout and a flyball to get out of the jam.
In the fourth, Gabby Callaway led the inning off with a hard-hit single to center field and advanced to second on an error by the outfielder. After a single from Bailey Hemphill, Callaway was thrown out on a fielder’s choice at home.
Claire Jenkins walked to load the bases with one out and JB Sides got an infield RBI single to score the second Alabama run. Merris Schroder’s RBI groundout extended the lead to 3-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, Peyton Grantham led the inning off with a double and scored on a sac fly by Hemphill to jump Alabama out ahead 4-0.
Six of the nine players in the starting lineup for Alabama had a hit, in the team’s 10th win of the season.
Alabama travels to Seattle this weekend to play in the Husky Classic, hosted by top-ranked Washington. The Crimson Tide will play Washington twice, and one game against each of BYU, Portland State and Northwestern starting March 2.
