As reported by the AJC and confirmed by AL.com and The Tuscaloosa News, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart will be named as the new head coach of the University of Georgia as early as Sunday or Monday, following the Crimson Tide’s appearance in the SEC Championship.

Smart has spent nine seasons with Alabama, assisting in three national championships and becoming the highest paid defensive coordinator in the country.

Smart will replace ousted coach Mark Richt, who led the Bulldogs for 15 season, amassing 145 wins and two SEC Championships. Smart, a Bainbridge, Georgia, native, played for the Bulldogs from 1995-98, and was a team captain as a senior.
