Derrick Henry’s first game as Alabama’s feature back netted his first SEC offensive player of the week award, the league office announced Monday.
Henry rushed for 147 yards on 13 carries in Saturday’s 35-17 win over No. 20 Wisconsin, including three touchdowns and 72 yards after contact, setting personal records for rushing yards and touchdowns in a game. Henry also caught two passes for 12 yards.
The 2015 season is Henry’s first as the official starter. In 2013, he was listed behind both T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake, and moved to the second position behind Yeldon last season.
“I think he’s a fabulous player,” Saban said after Saturday’s game. “He usually plays better as the game goes on in terms of workhorse-type guy. And it was good to see him make some good runs out there. We think the guy can be a fantastic player for us.”
