On Jan. 15, 2017, Bill Battle, current director of athletics at The University of Alabama, announced that he will step down from his position and assume a new role as special assistant to the president.

Battle has led the athletics department since March 2013 after succeeding Mal Moore. According to UANews, University President Stuart R. Bell said Battle will continue to lead the department until his successor transitions into the role.

“It’s my hope that during my tenure here, we have been able to make a difference in young people’s lives and at the same time move forward on different fronts,” Battle said to UANews. “I look forward to continuing to serve the University by working closely with the new AD to assist in a smooth transition…”
